When a mosquito latches onto you, it leaves behind its saliva which contains proteins the human body registers as unwanted. Your body then releases histamines in an effort to protect you. These compounds are what causes the itching sensation as well as swelling.
Here are some of the most effective ways to get a mosquito bite to stop itching:
Press an ice cube or cold compress against the bite. This will cause a numbing sensation, decreasing inflammation and itching.
Use anti-itch creams such as hydrocortisone cream on and around the bite. Look for ointments that have the ingredients “Lidocaine” or “Benzocaine”
Take over the counter antihistamines that are labeled non-drowsy such as Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin.
Apply rubbing alcohol to the bite for a short-term cooling effect. Only use a little to avoid burning your skin.
Apply a cream that contains lemon balm essential oils to ease inflammation, speed up healing and prevent infection.
Avoid these methods:
Rubbing or scratching the bite only activates more histamines, making the itch worse!
Some home remedies are not deemed effective by medical professionals, in comparison to recommendations above. These include honey, oatmeal, lemon juice, toothpaste, vinegar and aloe vera.
Do not apply garlic or baking soda to a bite, these can cause skin dryness, burning and irritation.
